Director of Audience Development

Cambridge, MA

The Director of Audience Development is responsible for formulating and managing strategy to scale MIT Technology Review (http://www.technologyreview.com) audience, cultivate user engagement, increase user loyalty and optimize conversion.

This role is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned professional with a track-record of successfully developing new and loyal audiences who deeply engage with content across multiple channels. The ideal staffer possesses an innate understanding of where and how to grow and nurture audiences and can develop a cohesive strategy for content that drives audience growth and engagement consistent with MITTR brand.

The Director of Audience Development is highly analytical, quantitative, nimble and creative; an independent-thinker with the ability to critically incorporate data and testing into the decision-making process. Curiosity, motivation and rigor, but not rigidity, are a must.

Responsibilities include:

  • A keen interest in how technology affects society and business; technology information in the larger media marketplace, as well as an understanding of audience and MITTR as a whole
  • Drive site traffic through a wide variety of channels (social media, SEO, SEM, email, newsletters, and strategic partnerships) with attention to ROI and alignment to business goals.
  • Work with leadership to determine growth KPIs and align with revenue strategy
  • Create measurement plans, establish benchmarks and reporting as well as driving audience growth and engagement through data analysis
  • Identify new growth opportunities, data-driven initiatives, and best practices based on emerging trends, competitive business intelligence and consumer insights
  • Utilize sophisticated analytics tools to form actionable insights from data
  • Proactively serve as the key interpreter of all user metrics, translating data into actionable information and recommendations for site and/or product enhancements within the audience development arena
  • Work cross-functionally with editorial, product development, ad sales and marketing to identify opportunities, execute brand initiatives and maximize customer monetization
  • Amplifying reporting about audience development to key stakeholders across MITTR.
  • Project manage all audience development touch points and associated components, from inception to successful completion
  • Providing insights on how best to manage email newsletters as well as identify opportunities to grow newsletter readership, and optimize performance

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in marketing, marketing communications or related field of study
  • 7+ years of experience with major website experience, online marketing agency, audience development agency, media or publishing organization with a thorough understanding of online business models and strategies
  • Proficiency with direct response principles and practices a must
  • Mastery of major social platforms and point of view as to how social media is evolving for different audience segments
  • Ability to articulate big ideas, analytically-driven, to meet ambitious goals
  • Hands-on experience managing digital audience acquisition programs
  • Fluency in Google Analytics and similar web reporting tools
  • Keen interest in experimenting with new platforms, including confidence about pivoting quickly and implementing new processes with speed and accuracy.
